Portrait Masters Awards 2018

In March of 2018, I submitted 8 images to The Portrait Masters Awards and Accreditation. Each submission is graded by a panel of judges and a final score is given based on the average of the judges’ scores. Points toward accreditation are awarded based on the scores and are accumulated based on an international judging system.

Of the 8 images I submitted, 5 scored high enough to receive Bronze awards with points toward accreditation.

Each image was required to have been taken within the previous 24 months.

Here are my Bronze award winning images:

J. Family | Maternity Session | Northern Michigan Photography

These two gorgeous parents-to-be were up from Florida visiting family last March when we met up in Grayling for some **cold** winter morning pictures! Thankfully we didn’t spend too much time outside before coming in for a few studio portraits to complete their maternity session.

Thank you so much for coming to see me while you were in Michigan! And congratulations on the birth of your beautiful baby girl last summer!

Brand New! | S. Family | Northern Michigan Photographer

I can’t believe this little guy is already a year old! I love this sweet family so much, I wish we could get together every week. I’m always thankful for the times we do see each other, and I was so excited to get to meet their newest addition in December 2017 for a super quick (yet startlingly eventful) photo shoot to capture the newness of becoming a family of four.

I can’t wait to see you all again soon!

Glamour | Nicole B. | Northern Michigan Photographer

Sweet, incredibly talented, kind-hearted Nicole. This girl is simply amazing! Her kindness and joy just bubble out to everyone around her! Her laugh is infectious and she has this way of putting people at ease, listening with patience, caring intensely about the people around her.

I met her about 5 months before we got together in the studio for this session, and I think we could have laughed and talked and kept shooting all day -we had so much fun! She is such an inspiring person, so beautiful inside and out. My life has been blessed by knowing her!

Not only is her beauty stunning and her heart full of kindness, she’s also incredibly talented at creating delicious, healthy, plant-based food. I’m not even kidding, her food is AMAZING!!ย  An entrepreneur who has started a pop-up restaurant service in the Detroit metro area, she has a passion for sharing a message of health and restoration. Go check out her website to see when the next pop-up date will be!

Glamour | Mother & Daughter | Carrie & Kaylee

A mother/daughter glamour session – what a wonderful gift for any mom and daughter!

These days are so fleeting, so precious!

Working with Carrie and Kaylee was amazing. I loved watching their interaction with each other. It was sweet and saucy, a genuine friendship with honesty that is refreshing!

They came in to my in-home studio, had their hair and makeup done, for a full 3 hours of feeling pampered and beautiful! Here are a few of the favorites from their session.

First Birthday | Baby D. | Northern Michigan Photographer

Sweet Baby D! Such a beautiful baby girl, growing so very fast! It seems like she was just coming in with her parents for her newborn pictures, and then just moments later for her first birthday.

Now we’re coming up on her second birthday and she is a proud big sis to a new baby brother!

Thank you for letting me capture these precious moments!

Sisters | Studio & Outdoor | Northern Michigan Photographer

2016 is swiftly winding to a close, and yet here I am still catching up on 2015 sessions and images!

Today I’m sharing a few of my girls last fall, when we had these gorgeous sister sets from Rainey’s Closet rented for fall family pictures. I love how sweet they all looked in these coordinating sets that were pulled together by the owner, Erica. It was such an easy process to rent the gorgeous clothes and accessories and I hope to do more styled sessions for children in the future! What little girl doesn’t want to be a princess for a day?! My girls absolutely love dressing up with layers of lace and tulle for birthday pictures.

Are you setting goals for 2017 yet? I know I’ve been writing down my lists of goals for about a week now, looking forward to seeing progress as we begin a new year!

I have goal lists for my personal life and for my business.

Personal goals include reading lists and activity plans with the kids, daily habits for better health and relationships, achieving things that I’ve been saying I want to do “someday”, that sort of thing.

Business goals include finishing specific educational courses and learning new skills, creating inspiration boards, take a marketing class, achieve certain benchmarks in both sessions booked and sales so that growth can continue in an upward pattern.

I’ll be honest, though! I’m not good at setting goals and I tend to set the bar low enough that I’m assured of clearing it with ease.

What AM I good at? Procrastinating on those low goals until the very last minute. Yikes!

So here’s to a higher aim, more focus, and less procrastinating in 2017! We can DO this!!

img_9728-edit-small

So what are your goals for this New Year, and how do you make sure you stay on track? Any tips and tricks that really help you maintain that focus?

Whatever the plans you have – I hope you have a wonderful New Year’s Celebration and enter 2017 with hope and cheer and a sense of good purpose!

Glamour | Kristen | Her Experience with Riverains Photography

beforeafter-2Looking back a few years to July 2013 to my session with Kristen! This was just a few short months after I’d discovered the incredible talent of Sue Bryce and had begun to learn the techniques behind her wildly successful Glamour Portrait business. What drew me to Sue Bryce was hardly her business sense, though. It was her amazing ability to connect with all women, of all backgrounds, body shapes, and insecurities, and in the space of a few hours reveal to them their own beauty….and capture it in an image that would remind them, over and over, what it means to embrace it. Embody it. Live it.

Kristen was gracious enough to be one of the first practice sessions as I began the learning process! She suffers from adult acne which makes it difficult at times for her to see past to the beauty within. During the time we spent together, I was amazed by the easy way she connected with the camera, and thrilled to see the intensity and confidence shining bright through her eyes and her body language. It was a great experience for me, and I was happy to have Kristen write this wonderful review of her side of the experience!

Kristen 7747 edit 2 jpg small “When I first heard “glamour shoot” I instantly thought of the horrible circa 1990s glamour pictures you would get done at the mall. I was hesitant. However with talking to Lisa and seeing her passion and excitement for her photography, I knew for certain this was not going to be pictures you get from the mall. From the moment I sat in the makeup chair, I felt at ease. As a mother of two, I do not get many opportunities to put on makeup and an outfit that I feel sexy in. Lisa and her makeup artist, Raini, not only exuded confidence in their abilities to make me feel beautiful but also exuded kindness in making me feel at home. Lisa’s goal of the day was to capture a shot that I could reflect on and see that I am beautiful! It is not very often that you come across a photographer that is equally as thrilled as you to see the outcome of the shoot. Lisa’s excitement throughout the whole session created fire within me. For those couple of hours I was a supermodel and I liked it! Lisa’s passion for photography is clearly evident in her work. I was shocked at how many photographs she came back with at the reveal. Each one was stunning and beyond my wildest expectations. The photos made me embrace what was already there; my beauty. The whole experience is something that I will cherish forever. I not only walked away from this shoot with breathtaking photographs but with more confidence about the person I am inside and out.” ~KristenKristen 7758 small

Northern Michigan Natural Light Studio: The H. Family

Sweet baby D. joined her parents in February and we split her newborn session into two parts, a sweet little sleepy babe session in their home and later, a bit of time with all three of them as a family in a natural light studio setup. I love the simplicity of the clean, crisp white wardrobe with neutral backdrop. We had a wonderful time capturing this special time and we made two gorgeous canvases, two custom designed albums, and her birth announcements from these images. Keepsakes that will last a lifetime and beyond!

RED: A Traveling Dress Adventure!

One of the many resources I have been grateful to utilize in my photography journey is the Focused Photographers Forum. They are an amazing group of talented photographers willing to share their time and knowledge to other photographers as we all learn and grow together. Photography is, for so many of us, a life-long passion for further education, greater understanding of the craft, and pushing toward accomplishment of a vision that is our own, traveling the sometimes difficult path to get that vision from our brains to the back of the camera or the front of the computer screen. Joining forces with other talented photographers, such as those on Focused Photographers, makes traveling that path easier….and way more fun!!

The Traveling Red Dress Challenge: A certain Red Dress was purchased and sent to each of a dozen or so participants around the country (and 1 in Canada!). We were to keep the dress for a maximum of 5 days before sending it on to the next person on the list. Everyone had the same dress to work with, but of course, each of us had our own struggles with how to use the dress, finding the right (petite) model to fit into the dress, coordinate tight schedules and make our own unique vision come to life! All in all, the project took a few months to complete, beginning in mid January and just finished up the first week of May. I received the dress in mid March and was able to pull in my Hair and Makeup artist, Raini Jenkins, as well as my model Mary Williams, get us all together, shoot these images while the weather cooperated (some in the snow!), and mail the dress within my allotted time frame. Whew! ๐Ÿ˜‰

At the time of publishing this post, I have yet to see ANY of the images taken by the other participants! I am SO excited to finally see the finished work of everyone in the group! We were asked to share our 1-2 favorites, and these are mine! I couldn’t decide between the color and black and white edit on the outdoor shot, so I am sharing both. Hope you enjoy following along our blog circle to see all of the other fabulous images shared today on our big RED: A Traveling Dress Adventure Reveal!

I enjoyed this so very much, and I want to say “Thank you!” to each of the other photographers who participated with me and a special “THANKS!” to Beth Russell (Photos by ejrussel) for doing all of the leg work and organization for this project and for sending each of us little gifts to make our challenge shooting and editing just a little bit sweeter!

Please head over to Cheri’s blog HERE to check out her take on the RED: A Traveling Dress Adventure Project! This is a blog circle! Ever heard of it? A blog circle links from one blog to the next in a complete circle. Click on the linked up blog on each post until you find you way all the way back to me! Although there were a dozen or so of us participating, not all photographers have a blog, so the circle won’t be terrible big or take up a great deal of your time. Comments are awesome! Thank you for taking a look!
